In The Rearview Mirror pt.1

Flashback Friday

First Quarter of 2016

2016 went by so fast, but oh so slow. It is hard to find the balance between work, free time and also research time, at least for me. This year we decided that I should move from Alaska to Wisconsin, which meant I had a ton of things I needed to finish, ASAP. But I did and I moved. The first half of this year I spent in Alaska, the second half in Wisconsin, well, I guess technically 5 vs 7 months, but who counts?

January

I went back from christmas celebration in Bozeman already in December and celebrated the new year with Tycho in my little cabin in the woods. On new years day Tycho got sick, and I still don't know what happened but he's alright now! January had lots of Aurora of course, as always. I skied some and also tried out fatbiking for the very first time. Other than skiing, biking and hanging out in the cabin by the wood stove I of course worked on my own research to wrap things up.

February

More winterbiking, more aurora and more of hanging out at the cabin. Winters in Alaska can be rough but they are absolutely stunningly beautiful, and cold. I also went and saw the start of the Yukon Quest again, had more fika, and even a beer or two!

March

Finally March arrived and our Green Card Interview! W came to Alaska and we went down to Anchorage for the interview, with a pitstop in Talkeetna for a skirace and also to Homer for a short weekend adventure. These interviews are somewhat ridiculous but absolutely serious. Like when the guard to get into the building asks W if he has a hand-grenade or anything alike on him. Situations like that just makes me want to make a joke and say "ooh gee, I do have one in my back pocket", since you aren't allowed to bring any bags or almost anything into the meeting. On the way back we got a text saying that they started the production of the card!

July brings Summer Birthdays

July 13th

Many of my friends have their birthday in July. Three of my closest friends do, and W too of course, even W's brother! This year I celebrated my birthday alone, W is in Yellowstone and I am solo at the house, well I do have the kitty cats. I don't envy him for being in Yellowstone with all the crazy tourist, have you seen all that has happened there lately?

Birthdays are a bit overrated though, I mean every day we are one day older than the day before. Either way, me and W will go out for a nice dinner somewhere when he gets back.

Alaska

I have spent many of my birthdays in the field in Alaska, couldn't ask for anything better :) I love being out in the field, out in the boreal forest, in the middle of nowhere (well almost) and that is something I really really miss.

Madison

Here in Madison, instead of a stroll through the forest I now go for walks through the neighborhoods. Instead of berries and fireweed I am watching all the magnificent gardens. We have sunsets here too, but it's hard to find them, because they disappear as soon as they appear and most of the time there is a house or two that blocks the view.

New Home - Madison, WI

June 22

Ugh, it's been too long since I updated my blog, again. At least I can excuse myself by saying that moving to a new place across the country takes time. Adjusting to a new place takes time too.

Wisconsin vs Alaska

I wont lie, I really really miss Alaska, but Wisconsin has a lot to give too, I just have to get used to it. There are so many more social things I can do here. There are local shops in various neighborhoods, many local breweries, and live music at cafe's and bars to name a few. I can go on a stroll down to two different lakes if I feel like it, walk or bike 5-10 minutes to hit a grocery store. The farmers market is huge, and cheap!

The past few weeks the temperature has been in the 90's (30°C), inside the temperature has stalled at about 77°F until this morning when it finally dropped down, to 74°F. We keep the windows open at night and close them during the day, we also did buy an AC when I just got here, which I am so happy about. I don't think I would have been able to survive without it.

Tycho disappears during the night, probably out hunting, something, or trying to escape the heat. I think I know where he goes though, the neighbor's flower bed by the driveway. Maybe it's cooler there? He usually comes when I call for him, but not anymore. I don't know if he's angry that I took him away from heaven on earth to hell, temperature wise, it's hard to tell what a cat thinks. If he's not outside exploring the yard, or I guess the neighbors flower bed, he sits by the window and watches the day go by. He did do that in Alaska too, so that's not something new.
