Fall Fell?

Wednesday Thoughts

"The beautiful changes as a forest is changed
By a chameleon’s tuning his skin to it;
As a mantis, arranged
On a green leaf, grows
Into it, makes the leaf leafier, and proves
Any greenness is deeper than anyone knows" - Richard Wilbur

Fall Fell Somewhere

We went to Colorado this past weekend, and I get it, Colorful Colorado! Well, Alaska gets really colorful during fall too, but I haven't even experienced fall here in the midwest yet. The temperatures in the midwest are still lingering close to 80F if you are unlucky, but drops down into the 50-60's during the night, FINALLY. In Alaska on the other hand, all leaves are already gone by now. A year ago around this time we got our first big snowfall, and September turned out to be one of the snowiest on record.

Look out for more posts about colorful Colorado, obviously I have a lot more pictures to share :)

Camping and glamping

Flashback Friday

Camping

Last time I went on a camping trip (as in sleeping in a tent), it was when W and I drove from Alaska to Madison. It was ok, because it's always nicer to be able to have your own pillow etc, which you can gladly bring when you have your car with you. Better yet, I had all my belongings with me, which doesn't necessary mean we had a glamping kind of camping trip.

One of the best camping trips I have been on was when some friends and I went canoeing in Alaska. It was a perfect 3 day trip, it rained, but not too much. And by the end of the first evening it cleared up.

En av de bästa camping turerna jag tagit var med några vänner för ett par år sedan, vi paddlade kanot och var borta ett par dagar.

Pine Cliff and Lakeview Trails

Adventure Tuesday

I know the weeks seem to go awfully fast and September is already upon us. Although, no fall weather here yet since the temperatures were in the upper 80's this past weekend.

Pine Cliff and Lakeview Trails

We went to Governor Dodge state park again, and as I mentioned before these parks are fairly big with lots of different trails. This time around we decided to do a hike around the lake called the pine cliff trail, and also a smaller hike called the lakeview trail. Again these parks never seem to cease to amaze me. They are always a mix of deep forest, fields of wildflowers and if you are lucky even some cliffs. We started of in the forest before we climbed up the ridge line.

You start by walking through a dense stand of deciduous trees, and work yourself towards a more pine dominated vegetation.

There are of course a ton of small details to look at as you move through the forest, much to W's despair.

The main attraction is just like the name gives away, a pine cliff, that is a cliff with lots of pine growing upon it.

I am always so amazed that trees and plants for that matter can grow in places with practically no soil.

Eventually we worked our way down the ridge and came back down towards the lake.

With a thin layer of topsoil I was not surprised to encounter this area, where apparently a tornado went through a long time ago.

These trails can also be used during the wintertime for crosscountry skiing. I just wish we will get enough snow to be able to get out this winter.
