Flashback Friday

First Quarter of 2016

2016 went by so fast, but oh so slow. It is hard to find the balance between work, free time and also research time, at least for me. This year we decided that I should move from Alaska to Wisconsin, which meant I had a ton of things I needed to finish, ASAP. But I did and I moved. The first half of this year I spent in Alaska, the second half in Wisconsin, well, I guess technically 5 vs 7 months, but who counts?

January

I went back from christmas celebration in Bozeman already in December and celebrated the new year with Tycho in my little cabin in the woods. On new years day Tycho got sick, and I still don't know what happened but he's alright now! January had lots of Aurora of course, as always. I skied some and also tried out fatbiking for the very first time. Other than skiing, biking and hanging out in the cabin by the wood stove I of course worked on my own research to wrap things up.

February

More winterbiking, more aurora and more of hanging out at the cabin. Winters in Alaska can be rough but they are absolutely stunningly beautiful, and cold. I also went and saw the start of the Yukon Quest again, had more fika, and even a beer or two!

March

Finally March arrived and our Green Card Interview! W came to Alaska and we went down to Anchorage for the interview, with a pitstop in Talkeetna for a skirace and also to Homer for a short weekend adventure. These interviews are somewhat ridiculous but absolutely serious. Like when the guard to get into the building asks W if he has a hand-grenade or anything alike on him. Situations like that just makes me want to make a joke and say "ooh gee, I do have one in my back pocket", since you aren't allowed to bring any bags or almost anything into the meeting. On the way back we got a text saying that they started the production of the card!

On the Road

Adventure Tuesday

On the Road

This Christmas we have been on the road quite a bit. Not traveling super far, but far enough to be on the road for several hours. We went to a forest service cabin just outside Butte, we also went to Yellowstone National Park, and just recently to a ski place called Maverick Mountain. The best things about traveling by car is that you get to see so many different areas, and beautiful nature scenes, Oh and mountains, endless supply of mountains.

Big Sky Country

I feel like I can never get enough of sunsets and mountains. Montana is just so beautiful! Definitely Big Sky Country! If you have never been to Montana before, I definitely recommend you to go. Not only do you have great access to Yellowstone National Park, but also Glacier National Park, along with many National Forests along the way.

Do you have a favorite country, state or alike that you just can't get enough of?

Hesitating Beauty

New Years Thoughts

New Years Eve has approached, as it always does once a year. I don't really celebrate birthdays any longer, because I feel like it is yet another day in life, we are only one day older than the day before. Age is just a number, right? In some way I feel the same way about New Years Eve. I am a morning person so I am usually sound asleep once the new year hits. I do love celebrating New Years Eve though, because we eat good food, have nice drinks and so on, oh and dress up. Fireworks was something I was excited about when I was young, or actually I am not sure if I was that excited about them, or if it was mostly my parents who were, either way I don't really care about them either. Last year I celebrated new years alone in Fairbanks, and I was once again sound asleep when the new year hit. I did wake up around midnight though to go to the outhouse, and there was a beautiful aurora show going on.

Nature and rawness

What do I want out of 2017? I want more nature adventures. As you all probably know by now, nature has a special place in my heart. How could we ever live without it? I can't imagine living in a city like New York, nor do I usually have any interest in visiting places like that. Don't get me wrong, I love culture and exploring cities, but crowded places and me just doesn't work. I want more raw experiences, I want to feel that I am alive. I want to be cold, so I can appreciate the warmth. I want to get lost so I can appreciate being on the right path. I want to get wet in a rainstorm so I can appreciate staying dry. I want to bushwhack through the untouched forest so I can appreciate walking on a road from time to time.  They say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, or that hardships build character.
